OpenTAP is DIDcomms' TAP-to-SMS gateway service. It allows security alarm panels, fire systems, and monitoring equipment to send SMS alert messages using the standard TAP (Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol) over an ordinary analogue phone line — no internet connection required at the alarm panel.
TAP is the protocol used by most commercial alarm panels and monitoring systems to transmit alphanumeric pager messages. OpenTAP receives those TAP calls, decodes the message, and forwards it as an SMS to any UK or international mobile number. This keeps aging alarm systems compatible with modern SMS alerting infrastructure without requiring hardware replacement. OpenTAP supports the V.23 modem standard used by UK alarm systems, operates 24/7, and can deliver alerts to multiple recipients simultaneously.
