Theresa May Promises £1B Fund For Post-Brexit Britain

Northern towns are set to be given a large portion of a £1 billion post-Brexit fund, to help communities in need.

The funds will be spread over the next seven years to supplement the work of council.

According to the Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the North West will receive the biggest boost.

Meanwhile, the South East, including councils like Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk, will see very little of the billion-pound pot.

MP James Brokenshire said on BBC Radio 4, ‘This funding is there regardless of the outcome, but obviously we want to see a deal happening, we believe that is what is in the best interests of our country.’

Prime Minister Theresa May added, ‘Communities across the country voted for Brexit as an expression of their desire to see change – that must be a change for the better, with more opportunity and greater control.

‘These towns have a glorious heritage, huge potential and, with the right help, a bright future ahead of them.’

Political opponents have criticized the move as pandering and buying support for May’s Brexit plans.

The funding break down:

  • North-west England: £281m
  • North-east England: £105m
  • Yorkshire and the Humber: £197m
  • West Midlands: £212m
  • East Midlands: £110m
  • South-west England: £33m
  • South-east England: £37m
  • East England: £25m
